Young old-fart confession time: I do not have an iPod. I do not have an iPhone. I do not even have my own alternative mp3 player. I know, I am so lame.
The keyword here is "yet". Yet I suffer from severe app lust while I await that glorious day when my current cell plan is up *coughMarch*. Yet I await the day when I no longer have to stick to the free sections of iTunes because Apple is a jealous er, you know. One who makes it real iffy for me to convert their legally protected files into mp3s. Grr, evil creator of all things beginning with "i"! (*cough come and get me baby*)
While I bide the time of my virginal conquest a la Apple, I must content myself with a) good ol' CDs--you can touch them and everything!--b) the albums Sam has loaded onto his mp3 player, and c) my XM radio subscription. In reality these are wonderful, excellent music mediums. I am very grateful for the XM, in particular. What frustrates me is the limited control I have over them. With an iPhone/Pod I will be able to pick and choose what songs I like, rather having to buy an entire album or rely on a radio to make my playlist. When it comes to music, I currently feel like I have blinders on.
At any rate, I have decided to implement a new segment, called:
What is on my Imaginary iPod?
1
Song: Superman by Five for Fighting
Why: I came across this oldie but goodie while browsing one of the XM blend stations. These kinds of stations are one of the reasons I do love my XM. A song that may have bugged you by being over played a few years ago can sound totally new after an extended break.
Fave lyric:
I'm only a man in a silly red sheet
Digging for kryptonite on this one way street
Only a man in a funny red sheet
Looking for special things inside of me
Inside of me
Inside of me
Thoughts: I really like how this song points out the silly aspects of our fave comic book hero and then sings them seriously. At the same time they make him a metaphor for the leaders and celebrities of our day. The result is that this song is simultaneously funny and reflective--so clever.

Song: Say Hey (I Love You) by Michael Franti & Spearhead
Why: One day I was pissed at Sam for whatever reason. I don't remember what it was. Anyway, I had to drive down to Poway to pick him up from the motocycle repair place. I jumped into my car, fuming, rolled all the windows down, poured on the gas, and absolutely blasted the XM. (The kids by now are used to my teenage driving habits, LOL.) This song came on, and within a few minutes of singing along, I had totally calmed. I had a huge smile on my face. How could I not? It's such a fun, positive song. Sometimes you have to reflect on the good to put life in perspective, no?
Fave lyric:
I say, hey, I'll be gone today
But I'll be back all around the way
It seems like everywhere I go
The more I see, the less I know
But I know one thing, that I love you
I love you, I love you, I love you
Thoughts: Already covered.
3
Song: Run This Town by Jay-Z featuring Rihanna, Kanye West
Why: Living at my parents has the un-benefit of making me feel like an emotional teenager sometimes (see above). And, as teenagers channel their feelings through music, so have I been doing. Due to my oft-felt frustration, rap/hip-hop is kind of hitting me right there these days. This song is angry & defensive. Perfect. Also, how could you get anymore of a heavy hitter combo than these three, hello? I dare you to listen to this song and get the hook out of your head. (But please don't listen to it if you are easily offended...this is gangsta rap after all.)
Fave lyric:
Life's a game, but it's not fair
I break the rules, so I don't care
So I keep doin' my own thing
Walkin' tall against the rain
Victory's within the mile
Almost there, don't give up now
Only thing that's on my mind
Is who's gonna run this town tonight
Thoughts: Anthem of a generation, hmm. This song is a brutally honest perspective from the ghetto. From a pimp, drug dealer, whatever. Jay-Z grew up in that, so he knows. The lyrics are beautiful crafted, perfectly performed to the point that I get it, and I am there. Totally makes me think and shiver. I like that, because I live in a comfortable Christian bubble, and I need to remember that my world is not everyone else's.
